Thongs in different countries and cultures

Hello everyone,

Maybe there has been a thread about this maybe it was on an older forum but I think we need one anyways.

So my question to you is what is your experience of women/girls in different countries and the attitude towards thongs and of course how many % of them would you say wear them? I myself have not lived in that many countries but at least I can tell about the few I've been living and dating in. But I'll let some others go first.

As an example I think we all now that women in most parts of Asia do not wear thongs where as in western and northern europe they are very popular, so tell me about your country (and others you may have knowledge of) and the current status of different types of underwear among women and whatever else comes to mind.

I think you're spot on with Asian countries. Cultural wise, I feel sexuality is something that's more "taboo" than something to be proud of or openly discussed. However, thongs are more prevalent among people of Asian descent in North America. Especially young women.

Here in Canada, I feel it is probably a good 50-50. More popular among younger women (30 or 35 and under).

This is just my thoughts as a Canadian person of Asian descent. From browsing content on YouTube, besides Europe, it seems that thongs are also very popular and a second nature thing in Latin America (maybe except Cuba, based on the government it is subjected under). Many latinas I have met for the most part are almost daily thong wearers.

I've traveled to a lot of countries so I'll write what I've experienced. Of course, most of these trips were only for a week or so, which isn't really enough time to gauge an entire culture, so if you live in any of these places please correct me if I'm wrong.

America: High waisted pants have made a comeback, making whaletails very improbable. However, I think more girls wear thongs than people realize. In high school, I saw a lot of whaletails with jeans and even see through dresses and skirts revealing thongs (we all know that if a girl is willing to wear a thong under a dress they probably wear thongs a lot). America is huge, so it depends on where you are. I'd say the more conservative areas (south, midwest) might be more restrictive of thong wearing, but more liberal parts can also be. Conservative areas have that slut shaming and name calling kind of aspect at times, but liberal areas also tend to shame whaletails a bit. However, with the trend of tolerance and acceptance, I feel like showing off thongs are a bit more accepted in liberal parts (west, north-east). They're also more popular in teens to 30-40 year olds I'd say, mostly because a lot of older women grew up in an age where thongs were seen as slutty and were looked down on. But after the 2000s, where girls wore thongs all the time, most of those women are in their late 20s, 30s, maybe almost 40s, but above that I'd say it decreases a lot.

Netherlands: (In Amsterdam at least) I only spent a week there but saw tons of thongs every day. Whaletails, see-through pants, see-through dresses, you name it. Any way you can see a thong you can probably see in Amsterdam. One girl was even wearing a completely sheer black dress, showing off her matching black bra and black thong. Of course, Amsterdam attracts a lot of tourists, so a lot of these women could be tourists, but still, Amsterdam has a very relaxed atmosphere, if you're thong is showing no one seems to care, people just live their lives.

France: France has a very conservative clothing style, so a lot of high waisted pants and nearly no tight pants, so pretty much no yoga pants, leggings, leather, or anything. A lot of very loose, high waisted clothing, making it hard to spot whaletails, so I'm not sure how many girls actually wear thongs. I spent nearly 2 weeks in France this summer and didn't see a single thong slip or anything. Considering that their style is more conservative, I would assume they don't wear thongs too much, but I'm not sure, maybe a French person could answer better.

Germany: Kind of an in-between of Amsterdam and France. They definitely have a bit more of a relaxed atmosphere like Amsterdam, but I didn't really see many slips like France. I did see a good amount of see-through leggings with thongs underneath, and even saw a girl out on her balcony in the morning in her bra and thong. I get the feeling most German girls wear thongs, mostly because they give me a 2000s (American) girl kind of vibe, which means a lot of thong wearing and thong showing. But I'd say Germany's kind of an in between from Netherlands and France, leaning more towards Netherlands.

Belgium: I mostly stayed in the northern part of Belgium, where they share more similarities with Amsterdam, rather than the south, which is more French/German (I think). But in the north, it was pretty similar to Amsterdam, saw some thongs, I think their attitude is probably the same as the Netherlands. Can't really say about the south, but I'd assume it's more like Germany/France.

Canada: I'd say pretty much the same as America, except for Quebec. Quebec is more like France, so a bit more conservative and might look down on thongs a bit more than in the rest of Canada, but I don't think it's too extreme, so it's safe to say they still wear thongs a lot.

Italy: They also wear a lot of flowier, looser clothing like in France, however when I went to Italy I saw multiple white thongs through white rompers/dresses, and a few more thongs through pants. The good thing about Italy is that they seem to like brighter clothes, meaning a lot of white, meaning it's easier for the clothing to be see through, especially if they wear a black thong. This is also true in France, but I didn't see as many see-through rompers in France, unlike Italy, where I saw quite a few. I'd say Italian girls wear thongs pretty frequently. Since France and Italy have loosely similar clothing styles, I would hope this means French girls wear thongs a lot too, but I'm not sure. Italy has a pretty friendly atmosphere, so I don't think they'd be upset about seeing a thong in public.

Britain: A bunch of thongs. Similar to Amsterdam, I saw quite a few everyday. However, most of them were in London, which leads me to believe a lot of them were tourists, like in Amsterdam. But even in some smaller parts of Britain, I saw some see-through leggings. In London, though, I don't really recall seeing many whaletails, but a ton of see-through leggings, probably because it gets pretty cold over there. I'd say it's pretty accepted to wear thongs there because a lot of the girls wear leggings or yoga pants since it's cold a lot of the time there, and most girls wear thongs under leggings or yoga pants.

Sweden/Denmark/Norway: I was really young when I went, and didn't even know what a thong was, but I do remember seeing a whaletail and wondering what it was. Now, I think most Scandinavian girls wear thongs, as evident by the sportswomen page on this site (lots of Norwegian girls wearing thongs) and these 3 countries share very similar cultures, so I'd say it's safe to assume they all have similar attitudes on wearing thongs, which is a lot.

Asia: I have absolutely no idea about the less developed Asian countries, but I'd say next to no thongs. In the more developed countries in the east, (China, Japan, Korea), I'd say it's a bit more frequent, but still uncommon. I'm half Chinese, and they are pretty restrictive about thongs and wearing revealing clothing. Thongs are seen as too sexual, something a lot of Asians family wish to avoid around teenagers, and would probably earn a shaming by the family if caught wearing them. However, I think once girls move out, they may wear thongs every once in a while. K-pop stars and other Asian stars seem to wear thongs, probably because they're more westernized. But yeah, it's pretty uncommon. Even if it was more common, the only way to find out is to be from there or live there and find out for yourself, because I highly doubt you'll be seeing a single thong slip anywhere from a local.

Mexico/Latin America: Didn't see any thongs whatsoever, saw a lot of panty lines through shorts/pants. However, they do have a party side, so I'm sure they turn to thongs in that case. Can't say about Latin America, but I'd say it's slightly similar, maybe with more thong wearing. It always depends on where you are, though. Some areas of Mexico are poorer and I doubt they wear thongs, but if you get in the heart of a big city in Mexico or Brazil and go to a club, you'll see a ton of thongs.

Again, this is just what I've observed from a few short trips, I've only lived in America and have family from China, so those are the only cultures I can truly speak on, the others are just observations, feel free to correct me.

Wow. Thanks for touching more into details on your experience. You're probably right on Latin America. I didn't really think about the income level aspect of things. I guess it seems to me thongs are very popular in Latin America, but thats due to their celebrities and middle class rocking it often it seems. Especially like Alejandra Maglietti and Flavia Fucenecco from Argentina, Francisca Undurraga from Chile, Tilsa Lozano from Peru, and of course lots of Mexican celebrities like Jimena Sanchez and Shanik Aspe.

Speaking of which, I can't wait to go to the Netherlands some day! With respect to America, I have heard many in Vegas love wearing thongs.

Shouldn't thongs cost less than bigger underwear, because it has less material?

Of course if we're comparing designer brand thongs to cheap cotton panties, that's not a fair comparison. If you compare within the same brand, thongs are cheaper.

What part of France did you go? I've been here for a few days and saw 2 whaletail already but on the beach the bikinis aren't really small but cover up about the upper half of the cheeks. In italy I saw a lot more whaletail than I did in university in another country. Just my 2c.

Interesting discussion.Somewhat surprised to hear clothing in Fance called conservative. Have long been under the impression that the Western European countries,at least some of them, were much more accepting and tolerant of nude beaches and the like, and that the bikini was widely accepted long before it was in the USA? And after all France gave us Brigitte Bardot, famous for nude scenes in some of her moves.
Or could be that it depends on what part of a country. Smalll rural villages could indeed have a different outlook than larger cities, particularly those with a big tourist impact.
Certainly true here in the US. Some communities in Southern states like Florida, Virginia, and South Carolina actually make wearing a thong to a public beach a criminal offense! Quite different from lets say, Southern California or Hawaii.

Don't know much about Asia, but from all the pictures I see of Japanese girls in thongs, its my belief that the more urban, westernized segment of the populace readily accept them.
Latin America? Also likely varies between countries and regions in them. And let us not forget it was those Brazilians who gave us the tanga or string bikini, and then the "frio dentale" that ushered in the Golden Age of the Glutes!

The interesting thing I noticed is that it can vary a bit between beaches and public swimming pools. The part of France I'm in now has a lot of Italian tourists and the beach goers often go topless but not a lot of thongs, it's unusual imo

Thanks for the replies everyone. It is a fascinating subject. This post of mine might be a mixture of a "thong story" and something pointing towards this topic.

I will start of with Sweden where I've lived for the most part of my life. I'm twenty-something now and when growing up in a smaller town hardly any of the girls in my class during my mid-teens wore thongs. They actually thought they were really scandalous for some reason and these were not your typical prude girls either, this included also the more popular and "cool" girls. For example we had a teacher who always wore skin tight jeans and the thong outline could very clearly be seen and they always talked about it behind her back and how disgusting it was. And I was sitting there wondering why this super sexy clothing was not popular among my class mates.

However this was not the case for all Sweden not at all. Maybe a case of small town vs. bigger cities and somehow different attitude in regions. When I went to visit my cousins during summers when being about that same age I took my shower in what was also combined washing room and my cousins who were about my age wore maybe 90 % thongs and when I realized this the first time I was amazed and so turned on but also rather surprised because no one of my friends of opposite sex wore them back home.

Well things were to change and today I would say the thong is very popular in Sweden among women of most ages at least up until 40. Some miss the thong slips and the low rise jeans. I think today is a lot better with the high waisted clothing (as long as it is tight) since it offers so much amazing booty and a lot of VTL. Unfortunately I was a teen in the last years of low waist popularity but no one was slipping thongs, only full back underwear, hardly even any lace among my circle of friends. If I was a teen today I think all girls wear thongs when working out especially. They are so used to them when having the tight yoga pants so most also wear them when using looser shorts as can be seen in sportswomen thread where most Swedish girls who don't have that disgusting spandex are showing off VTLs.

If I would go for the % question I would probably say that in the age span 15-25 it is today 70 % thongs or cheekies - 30 % full back. And 25-40 age span maybe 50-50. If any other Swedes on here please share your experiences.

My next post will be comparing Sweden to Denmark, Norway and Finland from my experiences.

Wow. Thank you for your insight in regards to growing up in Sweden. I personally would have thought with the Scandanavian countries being more reserved and to some extent conservative in a social manner. That thongs might not be as popular compared to more Southern countries within Europe. Guess I have been wrong all along!

France and western Europe is still very open about nudity, but French clothing (in Paris at least) is a bit more conservative. This doesn't really mean they don't wear short shorts, but rompers and usually not many midriffs or short shirts, and combined with high waisted pants, don't really leave any room for whaletails. But when I went to Chartres, a smaller town in France, the clothing didn't seem quite as "conservative." Maybe conservative wasn't the right word, but along the lines of it.

I guess I can continue, but would love more posts from others around the world.

I've lived in Denmark during studies and in Norway when working so I have some stuff to report.

When studying in Denmark early 2010s I was disappointed in the thong wearing of the girls. I lived in a dorm with mainly exchange students (both male and female) and there it was ok. Like the perv I was I went to the communal washing room in my corridor quite regularly and you could always see who had it booked but everyone could access with keys. We had two german girls who were both 100 % thong wearers. One dutch girl was also mainly thongs. Then there was a turkish girl and two spanish girls who had pretty much only full back ones. I remember some more if you want to know - but of course this is not to say that they represent 100 % their countries underwear culture lol.

Among the Danish girls I knew though the thong wearing was actually close to 0 %. As far as I know it is better and improving now with the younger generation wearing thongs a lot more which can be seen on hauls on youtube for example. But among the late 80s/early 90s which I hung out with I was always disappointed. I was dating this girl who was really hot (at least 8/10) and she only wore full back cotton panties. To this day I still do not know how I survived that trauma lol and I'm sure in many cultures this would be considered a crime lol.

Norway on the other hand, my god... During this time I was working and dating quite a lot and also spent quite some time at the gym. I can only say: I love Norwegian women. Every single girl I slept with during these two years I lived there (2016-2018) wore thongs. On the gym the girls wore tights and never ever the VPL but the VTL or hint of a thong is there almost always. Compared to Sweden where the thong is quite popular it doesn't even come close to Norway. These girls and women know how to dress well. From my experience I would say that at least 80 % of girls wear thongs all the time in age span 15-40. But it might just be where I was living. If we have any Norwegians here I would gladly be corrected, but I met and talked to quite a lot of women that I feel that I am not wrong when it comes to where I was staying.

That's all for now. Would love to hear more about different parts of USA and Canada and how they differ, also eastern europe would be interesting.

Speaking for Slovakia and Czech republic, thongs are not so popular as it were in their "golden ages" (approx. 2000-2008?).
Most of women I know, who were teenagers in these years and were actually 100% thong-only wearers, are now complaining
about them and wears them few times a year strictily only to avoid VPL under the tight dresses. When I asked some of them
why they stopped wearing thongs, altough they were wearing them daily for years in the past, they usually said something
like "OMG, it was sooo uncomfortable and I was young and stupid. Never again.".

I believe that among the younger girls (15-25 yo.), thongs are still quite popular, especially for use under the leggings and yoga pants, but unfortunatelly, it's really rare to see whaletail in public, because of the widely-accepted opinion of self-called fashion experts and bloggers, whaletail is considered as a fashion faux-pas in here.
Despite the fact that most of local men see whaletails and women wearing thongs in general as really hot.

I have no experience but I doubt it will be any good, unless it's a type of place where only foreign tourists go

So many British girls wear see through leggings I think it's just acceptable as regular everyday clothes.
I was in Manchester and Liverpool last year and the trendy thing there seems to be white linen pants with black underwear. I saw plenty, not only thongs but all different underwear.
