I'm currently visiting Ibiza, and this little island has filled me with confidence that whale tail fashion has made a full-on comeback. Like holy shit you guys. I've seen more thongs in 3 days here than I have in the last 20 years combined. I'm talking all varieties: high-rise thongs pulled high over pants, whale tails with skirts, completely transparent pants with thongs underneath, tight dresses with VTL, sometimes they even wear pants made of a net material that literally shows everything, and thong swimsuits are the majority on any beach. Sometimes you'll even see women with a "fake whaletail" because it's one of those skirts or pants with built-in straps that are meant to look like an exposed thong. It's like they decided to bring back whale tail fashion from the early 2000s, except even better and more extravagant this time.
A lot of people in Ibiza are young party-going tourists from England, France or Germany, so it's maybe a "biased sample" that doesn't represent most of the population. But I'm saying. If you consider yourself a thong enthusiast, (so basically everyone here), you gotta come here.

- When I was walking into this club Amnesia, the girl in front of me had on a pink triangle thong pulled high over a pink skirt. I then saw her adjust the thong by pulling the straps up even higher.
- In that same club, I saw at least 10 other women with a similar fashion choice. One girl in particular I found super hot was showing off her thong with a white strap in the back and green strings on the side, and a matching bra with the same color green strings. I mean these thongs were pulled like 6 inches above the skirt.
- On the sunset strip, literally half the women walking around had transparent clothing on with thongs visible. But my favorite one had black netted pants with a black g-string under, ALSO pulled over the pants on the sides, and there was a silver metallic piece at the back where the strings connected. The metallic piece was under the pants but clearly visible, and the side strings were pulled 2 inches over the pants.
- A group of 4 friends at a beach, all in thongs. One of them topless.

Another business/leisure trip, this time to Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was excited as there seem to be a lot of Argentines on Tiktok showing off their thongs for trends (I'll link some of them below). I knew I probably wasn't going to see many whaletails, as it is winter in Argentina and they tend to wear a lot of high rise pants.
Argentina (Buenos Aires especially) is quite European-influenced, as there was a smaller native population than other parts of Latin America, and immigrants from Europe were encouraged a long, long time ago. So many Spaniards, Italians, and Germans especially, but in general a lot of white or mixed people. This might be why the fashion is a little more European-influenced as there are more tight leather pants and rompers and whatnot. Maybe the Europeans also brought the thong culture over as well.
I was surprised at the amount of low rise jeans I saw, almost entirely worn by younger women, so it's probably like much of the y2k comeback trend. I only ever saw one whaletail from low rise jeans, though, and it was just barely a peek, but it looked like a red g-string. Otherwise, I saw at least 2 dozen VTL's through tight high-waisted leather pants and jeans, a lot of them of the lacy variety. They do seem to prefer lace, as lots of underwear stores we passed by had lacy thongs out front. We also passed through a weekend artisan market and multiple stalls were selling hand-made g-strings and g-strings only. I went to an underground club with friends and couldn't see much but I did see a white thong through a white dress, and a few of those thong bodysuits with the super high sides above their pants. We met up with a friend of my Argentine friend, and while she wore super high waisted pants as well, I thought I could make out a thong line through them.
Overall, thongs seemed pretty popular in my experience, especially with women under 50. I didn't spend long in Ecuador when I was there previously, but the European influence can clearly be seen in Argentina and I think it reflects in the fashion and thong-wearing.

I guess it can be hard to gauge who is imitating whom, but I suspect that when it comes to thongs, Argentinians probably looked to Brazil first. Obviously, thongs have existed forever in various forms, but since the trend of the modern thong largely came out of Brazilian beach fashion, I wouldn't be surprised if Argentina had their first "thong boom" at the same time, if not earlier than Europe/North America. Some quick googling supports this theory, but cold hard numbers on this topic are difficult to come by, so I'm not gonna say it's for sure.
It sucks, really. Literature and stats do exist, but since they're mostly meant for market research, they're crazy expensive to access. I'd love to see how the fashion industry is actually thinking behind the scenes when it comes to underwear design, or see charts of thong-sales throughout the years.

Nice! I have to say I'm always a little extra impressed with "nerdy girls" who wear thongs, since it's more of a given when it comes to girly-girls. I've dated a few women who were on the geeky side, and they did not wear thongs. Well, not at first. The majority were persuadable, and updated their panty drawer to accommodate my uncommon adoration with thongs.

From just 3 days in London, I noticed that many British women wear white semi-transparent clothing. It could be tight pants, a dress, or skirt. I saw more VTL in those 3 days than I have all year in the US. Also, a lot of younger British girls are dressing like the early 2000s with low rise pants and crop tops. It's nice!

I'm from Mexico and about the use of thongs I can tell you that at least in my city which is in the south of the country, what you see on the clotheslines are normal panties, In the person I have had contact with thongs (in addition to mine as I am a transvestite)
1. With the thongs of an aunt that I have to say she only had about 5 and the rest were normal panties, and a girlfriend of an uncle, she used pure thongs, the common denominator of them is that my aunt at the time was a “whore” and my uncle's girlfriend was a waitress in a bar, here in Mexico wearing thongs is seen as something associated with prostitution and promiscuity, at least in my city
2. With some college classmates, I got to see their VTLs but over the course of 4 years of college I counted about 5 classmates who wore thongs.
3. Talking with some students and friends, they tell me that at least they have a thong and wear it only when they have to wear tight dresses.
In spite of that, in supermarkets there are many models and designs of thongs on display, a sign that they are sold, but personally I think they use them more for intimacy (SEX) with their couples.
Where I have seen more VTL has been in the CDMX, since it is a more liberal city, there is more freedom in these aspects.

I was in Korea for a month and a half, and I saw a lot of ugly VPLs on Korean girls.
While I was in Korea, the temperature was around 30C. So, it was quite hot and I saw a lot of women in thin pants. The underwear lines were very visible, but they were mostly full panty lines. I saw one or two thong lines but they were close to cheekies.
I am happy to be back in Canada. There is just more diversity in Canada, and girls here have more booty. Korean girls are all pretty but they lack in the ass department.

Yes, it is very common for actresses to wear thongs because they are in the showbiz world, in that world, it is common to wear thongs because of the outfits they wear and I think that in the end, they get used to wear them and considering that they live in CDMX a very liberal city, but in the world of mortals, personally it is very rare to find a whale tail for a thong or VTLs, it is more common to find whale tails with normal panties and VPLs.
n my 30 years, in my city I have only seen 2 whale tails for thongs one was to a girl in a restaurant and the other to a teacher in high school and the VTLs of few college classmates, although once I saw some VTLs in church hahahahahah, from there on out it is very rare to come across some whale tails and VTLs, especially in my city which is somewhat distant from the center of the country and the cosmopolitan cities of my state.

To be fair, while I am sure many Aussie women wear them, the one state that certainly stands out from the rest of the country is no doubt Queensland. With thong bikinis being so popular at Surfers Paradise in the Gold Coast and in beaches all over Queensland, I had a feeling that thong undies would be a preferable choice for heaps. Considering a heap of Queensland can be hot year round (like Far North Qld).

Your assumption is right. Most women here wear thongs. Even the older ones, like in their 50's. So hot!
